Neurology
To promote optimal brain and nervous system health, the Health Services Authority (HSA) offers comprehensive neurology services, including advanced diagnostics and treatment options.
What is Neurology?
Neurology is a specialised medical field that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders affecting the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.
Time is crucial when it comes to recognising and responding to a stroke. Dr. Tamas Cseh, HSA Consultant Neurologist, spells out the acronym FAST: Facial droop, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, Time to call 911.
Neurology Services
Neurodiagnostic tests play a crucial role in accurately diagnosing and evaluating neurological conditions. The HSA neurology services offer a comprehensive range of advanced neurodiagnostic tests, including:
- Computed Tomography (CT) Scan: CT scan combines X-rays and computer technology to create detailed cross-sectional images of the brain and other structures. It helps diagnose conditions such as brain hemorrhage, tumors, and traumatic brain injuries.
- Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS): EMG and NCS are tests that evaluate the function and integrity of the peripheral nerves and muscles. They aid in the diagnosis of conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle disorders.
- Blood test: A blood test involves the analysis of a sample of blood to assess various aspects of a person's health. It provides valuable information about factors such as blood cell counts, cholesterol levels, and organ function, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as anemia, diabetes, and liver diseases.
- Cerebrospinal Fluid Analysis: Cerebrospinal fluid analysis involves the examination of the clear fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This diagnostic procedure helps in identifying abnormalities, such as infections or bleeding in the central nervous system and plays a crucial role in diagnosing conditions like meningitis, multiple sclerosis, and certain types of tumors.
- Electroencephalogram (EEG): This non-invasive test records the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as epilepsy, seizures, and sleep disorders.
Other tests including MRI and PET Scan may be required to diagnose and monitor various neurological conditions. These services can be used and offered by third party providers on island.
