The Radiology department is a multifaceted and highly specialized digital department that strives to meet the needs of all patients and clinicians in diagnostic imaging.

What is Radiology?

Medical Radiology is a broad term that covers several types of studies that require the visualization of internal body parts.

Radiology is the field of medicine that helps to diagnose and treat injuries and diseases using imaging techniques such as:

X-ray

X-rays or plain radiographs are produced using ionizing radiation to capture images of bones and other structures of the body. HSA uses modern digital radiography to diagnose issues such as fractures, dislocations, joint problems, pneumonias, bowel obstructions and other conditions. Digital X-rays show up instantly on a computer, which means fewer repeat images and less radiation exposure for our patients.

Computer Tomography (CT)

CT scanner uses a series of X-rays plus a computer to produce a cross-sectional 3D image of the inside of the body. CT scans provide more detail than X-rays and can better define areas where tissues overlap. CT scans detect smaller abnormalities in the body than conventional X-ray.

The use of contrast dyes in some CT procedures further improve visualization of some internal organs, such as cardiac, digestive, and urinary tract. CT procedures such as Angiograms and CT guided Ductal Drainage are done as less invasive procedures compared to open surgery, resulting in less surgical risk and shorter hospital stays.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves (no radiation), to produce real-time pictures or videos of a patient’s organs. It is the best known methos to examine a fetus during pregnancy and other disease diagnosis. The HSA uses ultrasound to diagnose conditions and evaluate many areas of the body including blood vessels, breast, thyroid glands, uterus, ovaries, kidneys, biopsies, and other abdominal structures.

Ultrasound does not involve radiation and is therefore safe in pregnancy.

Mammography

Mammography is the most effective imaging method used to examine and detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. It is a safe, low-dose X-ray examination of the breast. It is used as both a diagnostic and screening tool.

The HSA has a cutting-edge 3D digital mammography (tomosynthesis machine that conforms to the natural contours of the breast and provides a more levelled compression across the entire breast, resulting in a less painful experience for patients. The machine also captures images in exceptionally fine detail, with a computer aided detector (CAD) providing radiologists with a clearer picture of the breast and thereby significantly reducing false positives and increasing breast cancer detection. We also offer Stereotactic mammography guided biopsies, that is less invasive than original surgical procedures.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical specialty that uses imaging techniques to guide minimally invasive treatments for various conditions. IR can replace surgery for many diseases, such as cancer/ tissue biopsies, vascular disorders, liver problems, kidney stones, central line placement, drainage, and more. The HSA has an experienced Interventional Radiologist who has performed numerous procedures and techniques including Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) with successful outcomes.

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy uses X-rays, but in real time, to create moving images of the body. For some diagnosis, real time imaging is particularly important. For example, fluoroscopy may be used to note the change in flow of contrast in joints associated with an upper gastrointestinal or barium enema study, or to monitor progress during the intersection of a pacemaker.

Due to continuous monitoring during multiple images taken over time, radiation exposure with fluoroscopy is significantly higher than that of conventional X-rays.
