Emergency Medical Services

At the Cayman Islands Emergency Medical Services (EMS), we understand that emergency care begins with our first responders.

Our EMS team, equipped with advanced resources and skills, is deeply committed to caring for our communities.

HSA Emergency Medical Services

Our EMS team responds to 911 calls for service and provides residents with urgent pre-hospital treatment, stabilization, and transport, maximizing survival rates among the critically sick and injured.

Our team is staffed with locally registered healthcare professionals, including emergency medical technicians, intermediate-level EMTs, and paramedics operating advanced life support ambulances and handling thousands of emergency calls annually.

State-of-the-Art Fleet

Our EMS Department features a fleet of eight ambulances, six of which are newly acquired Type 1 models with significant design upgrades to include safety, innovation, and quality. All units have advanced medical equipment to improve patient safety and experience, enhanced ergonomic features, fleet efficiency, reliability, and response times.

In addition to retrofitting capabilities, our ambulance has unique features such as a liquid spring suspension system that improves the overall ride and handling of patients, a 360-camera system for safe operations, an anti-theft system, LED lighting, a multiplex electronic management system, and 360 patient access.

They are equipped with life-saving features that significantly increase patients’ survival rates, such as the cardiac monitor defibrillator, which nearly triples the odds of patients surviving cardiac arrest, and the remote view functionality allows clinicians to see real-time data from the device via a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

Added safety features and equipment include the fully powered hydraulic patient loading stretcher system that can lift patient loads up to 700 lbs., which eliminates lifting of the patient into the vehicle, and a power stair chair system that quickly pushes and pulls patient loads of up to 550 pounds up and down stairs. Infection control is enhanced with a built-in air and surface sterilization system that disinfects the air and all surfaces in ambulances.

We take pride in our eco-friendly approach, with an eco-smart idle reduction system that saves on fuel costs and reduces CO2 emissions. Each vehicle reduces emissions by 4.5 tons annually, contributing to a healthier environment.

Training Opportunities

Investing in the future of emergency care, we offer fully funded and accredited training programmes for Caymanians aspiring to join the EMS field.

Our Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Programme graduates have joined the team, bolstering our capacity to respond to emergencies effectively.

We also offer a unique ride-along programme that provides individuals interested in EMS with real-life experience and exposure.

Our EMS team are not just responders but guardians of life, dedicated to providing the highest standard of pre-hospital care when every second counts.

Non-Emergency Medical Transports

In addition to our primary response ambulances, we provide non-emergency medical transport to many of our most vulnerable and mobility-restricted patients for their time-sensitive appointments and care. Our fleet comprises hydraulic wheelchair lifts and the capacity to transport stretcher patients.

Our mission is to meet the needs of our community in a timely, efficient, and compassionate manner.
