Clinical Dietary & Nutrition
Diet and nutrition play a fundamental role in maintaining good health and well-being. A balanced and nutrient-rich diet provides the necessary fuel for our bodies, strengthens the immune system, supports organ function, and promotes overall vitality.
At HSA, we recognise the importance of diet and nutrition in achieving optimal health. With our Clinical Dietary & Nutrition team, patients can receive personalised guidance, practical strategies, and evidence-based advice to improve their dietary habits, manage specific conditions, and enhance their overall quality of life.
Clinical Dietary & Nutrition
Clinical Dietary & Nutrition is a specialised field that focuses on the relationship between food, nutrition, and overall health. It encompasses the assessment, diagnosis, and management of various dietary-related conditions to optimize health outcomes. Our team of Clinical dietary and nutrition experts, such as registered dietitians and nutritionists, work closely with individuals to develop personalised plans that address their specific nutritional needs and health goals.
Conditions Treated
Some common conditions that can benefit from clinical dietary and nutrition services include:
- Obesity: Diet and lifestyle play a critical role in the management of obesity. Our team advises on appropriate weight management and lifestyle strategies for successful weight loss.
- Diabetes: Proper nutrition is essential for individuals with diabetes to regulate blood sugar levels. Our team develops personalized guidance and goals that help to stabilise glucose levels, manage weight, and reduce the risk of complications.
- Heart Disease: A heart-healthy diet is vital in managing conditions like hypertension and high cholesterol. Our team offers guidance on reducing sodium and saturated fat intake, increasing consumption of heart-healthy foods, and promoting overall cardiovascular health.
- Chronic Kidney Disease: Nutrition and hydration can play a critical role in delaying the advancement of conditions like chronic kidney disease. Protein intake and micronutrient intake are adjusted based on lab work and the stage of kidney disease. Our team also collaborates with the Dialysis Unit in managing kidney diseases.
- Gastrointestinal Disorders: Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, and celiac disease require careful dietary management. Our team provides specific dietary approaches to alleviate symptoms, manage inflammation, and improve gut health.
- Women’s Health: Input from a dietitian during pregnancy can help optimize nutrition and assist with the management of different pregnancy-related conditions (such as gestational diabetes).
- Paediatrics/Adolescents: Good nutrition during these formative years can reduce the risk of chronic conditions. Educating children/teens on the importance of a healthy balanced diet can strengthen the immune system, promote healthy weight gain (including slow weight gain), and ensure healthy gut function. Our team helps to strategise dietary management of certain sensory/behavioral food aversion challenges such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other behavioral conditions including ADD/ADHD.
- School Meals: Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day and knowing that growing children need adequate nutrients for their developing brain and body; our dietitians' partner with the Ministry of Education to analyse all government school menus. These menus are vetted to ensure that children receive various nutrients from the best quality foods to meet their nutritional needs. All queries regarding school menus can be forwarded to schoolmenus@hsa.ky
- Food Allergies and Intolerances: Clinical diet and nutrition services can assist individuals with food allergies or intolerances by designing customised diets that eliminate specific allergens while ensuring proper nutrient intake, including elimination diets like Low FODMAP and gluten/wheat-free.
- Bariatrics: Nutrition interventions play a key role in the multidisciplinary approach to the bariatric surgery programme, including monthly support group meetings and individualised nutrition counseling both pre- and post-op.
- Malnutrition: Dietitians are key in diagnosing and managing malnutrition-related problems caused by poor nutrition, chronic illness, and nutrient deficiencies. Appropriate nutrition plans are developed, which may include oral nutrition supplements, fortification of foods, and a variety of interventions.
- Homecare: Illnesses are inevitable and often some illnesses may leave our loved ones non-ambulated or bedridden, requiring special care at home. Patients with special feeding needs often require follow-up nutrition care and analysis of their feeding regimen to ensure that vital nutrients are being provided.
