Emergency Medical Technician

Summary of profession

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) provide emergency and non-urgent patient care in ambulances equipped with medical supplies and diagnostic equipment to treat and manage patients prior to transporting them to hospitals or other Accident & Emergency facilities.

Working hours, patterns and environments

Most EMTs work full time and respond to a wide variety of medical and trauma calls. Their work is physically strenuous and can be stressful, sometimes involving non-urgent and life-or-death situations.

Education and skills

There are many facilities throughout the world including the Cayman Islands that offer training in the Pre-hospital field. Different levels require different types of training. The shortest training is the Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B). The requirements for the entry into the EMT-B Program: Current physical / vaccination records, High school diploma or GED, Driver's license, Current CPR card.
